Going back to slavery, the slaves with what was considered "bad hair" (i.e. nappy - a term that dates to the 15th century) were not permitted to be house slaves. They were considered too low of a quality and too different to be allowed in the house. But those with "good hair" (i.e. straigher, less kinky, less coarse and more like caucasian hair) were allowed to be house slaves (a coveted position for slaves).

"downy," 1499, from nap (n.). Meaning "fuzzy, kinky," used in colloquial or derogatory ref. to the hair of black people

btw - nappy doesn't just mean "curly" - it refers to the hair texture also.

Her hair is curly, not nappy.
Hair textures vary between races.
Another example to throw in there is that hairdressing practice mannequins are often made from the hair of people of asian descent. That hair type is stronger and smoother and can take more abuse than white or black hair. Just another example of hair-types vs race, which I think folks are missing the point on.
